What is a hackathon?
This is an event where volunteers of all ages and backgrounds come together to form different teams. The goal? To successfully complete a project (product, service, startup) on a given theme, typically over a period of 2 to 3 days.
"The term 'hackathon' (or 'programming marathon' in Quebec) refers to an event during which groups of volunteer developers come together for a set period of time to work collaboratively on computer programming projects."
(Source: Wikipedia)
But that’s not all! “Healthcare professionals, designers, and businesspeople” are also joining them, as shown in the event’s retrospective video.
Hacking Health Normandy
In this case, Hacking Health Normandie is a hackathon focused on healthcare. Needless to say, this is a critical issue… especially during the COVID-19 pandemic!
In fact, this health hackathon took place on March 6, 7, and 8.
One week before the announcement of France’s nationwide lockdown (coincidence …?).
Last March, no fewer than 71 participants gathered at the Rouen School of Medicine to champion this cause, which affects us all.
A three-day, two-night program during which participants take ownership of their project and get to know their classmates’ diverse backgrounds.
It’s not uncommon to hear people say, “The less you sleep, the stronger you are!”
In fact, sleep may be beneficial for some, but it can also be a waste of time for others. Because, let’s face it—time flies! So, depending on each person’s strategies and level of exhaustion, opinions vary.
The organization, for its part, consists of 19 volunteers who are always on the ball to ensure that everything runs smoothly.
With 25 coaches on hand, two workshops and two conferences are held to guide the teams and provide advice and insights.
And finally, 15 jury members listen to the presentations, evaluate the projects, and award prizes to the most deserving groups.
Hacking Health Normandy: 8 teams – 8 projects
HealthDiary:
An app designed to improve treatment adherence among patients with chronic conditions, featuring a simple and user-friendly interface. In addition to sending reminders (for taking medication, prescription renewals, and medical appointments), the app also tracks patients’ feelings and mental well-being regarding their treatment. This information can then be shared with the patient’s primary care physician.
Health Diary, winner of the Health Prize at Hacking Health Normandy
(including Damien and Clémence, members of Avant de Cliquer,
a member company ofAPSSIS(Association for the Security of Health Information Systems), the only organization dedicated to the cybersecurity of health information systems and data.
Click and Care:
An instant monitoring tool that uses a web service to display the availability status of hospital beds by department across the Rouen Coeur de Seine Hospital Group. Winner of the Innovation Award.
Theramusic:
An innovative collaborative web application that tailors therapy for people with Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia, leveraging audiovisual synergy inspired by the patient’s personal history and developed in collaboration with the family, to effectively reduce behavioral disturbances, stimulate cognitive function, and stabilize mood. Winner of the Jury’s Special Award.
Direct Hospital:
Direct Hospital is an app designed for general practitioners to facilitate direct hospital admissions without going through the emergency room. Winner of the NES – Normandy E-Health Award.
H-DIC:
The project aims to consolidate information from three public databases that are regularly consulted for drug-herb interactions, so that pharmacists need only perform a single search in one database (rather than consulting the three databases separately, as they did previously, which was very time-consuming). We also plan to integrate a literature monitoring feature into the tool so that the most recent articles on interactions can provide pharmacists with additional support in decision-making when there are discrepancies between databases, keeping in mind that the information must be confirmed by at least two sources!
Welcome Hospital:
An app that provides quick and easy access to information such as institutional details, on-call rosters, departmental operating procedures, contact information for key staff members, practical information like the location of on-call rooms, meal options, and useful tips, as well as protocols. This would help newcomers adapt more easily and streamline patient care for the benefit of patients.
IVAMI:
A smart photo frame designed for isolated seniors, aimed at helping them reconnect with their loved ones through social media, Skype, and other platforms. The device can be paired with sensors to monitor the senior’s health and alert caregivers in case of an emergency.
LAPOTHICARE:
Patients on multiple medications and their healthcare providers face numerous challenges in medication management: poor adherence, adverse effects, drug interactions, misuse, and self-medication—including herbal remedies and dietary supplements, which are very popular among the French. LAPOTHICARE supports community pharmacists, in collaboration with patients and physicians, in conducting pharmaceutical consultations, known as shared medication reviews: LAPOTHICARE guides the pharmacist, both on a personal level as they take their first steps in pharmaceutical consultations, and on a digital level with innovative tools—a mobile app for the patient and a web platform for the pharmacist.
