Honda: ransomware cyberattack blocks its industrial systems
On June 7, Honda was the victim of a ransomware cyberattack. A virus infiltrated and spread throughout its computer networks. The malware (EKANS) paralyzed several of the automaker's factories around the world.
EKANS malware, also known as Snake ransomware, targets ICS (industrial control systems) by rendering them inoperable.
Like all ransomware, this type encrypts data. The group of hackers behind the cyberattack then demands a ransom payment in exchange for access to the data and/or to resolve the situation.
In Honda's case, this involves restoring its IT network and connectivity. This will in turn enable the company to restart its factory equipment, commercial operations, and production.
Honda reports that its IT infrastructure in Japan and Europe was also targeted. Access to servers, email, and internal systems was affected.
This is not the first time Honda has experienced such a mishap, as the Group had already suffered a cyberattack in 2017 (WannaCry).
To date, the investigation is ongoing...
Cyberattack on HONDA's industrial control systems
Hackers are therefore able to target and take control of ICS. This incident should alert the automotive industry to the importance of cybersecurity.
Indeed, vehicles are now all equipped with Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, USB ports, etc., but also with braking and guidance systems that are potentially susceptible to corruption.
Furthermore, autonomous vehicles are expected to become ubiquitous in the next decade. It should be noted that these cars depend on their environment: sensors, cameras, radars, positioning and mapping systems will replace humans.
Cybersecurity is everyone's business!
Cybersecurity must therefore become a major concern for car manufacturers from now on.
Equipping oneself with technical IT security solutions (antivirus, firewall, antispam, etc.) and organizational solutions (raising awareness and training employees in cybersecurity) must, in all cases, become the top priority for all organizations.
