Cyberattack: ransomware
In its December 19, 2017, edition, the newspaper La Côte reports on a mishap at a medical-social facility in the canton of Aargau, Switzerland. These facilities are equivalent to our nursing homes.
After being hit by a ransomware attack in November, the facility had to pay a ransom. The amount remains undisclosed. This allowed it to regain access to its encrypted data.
Although severely affected, the facility continued to operate, even during the attack. This was possible because patient records were also stored in paper format.
Avant De Cliquer is a member of theAPSSIS, the Association for the Security of Health Information Systems, the only organization dedicated to the
cybersecurity of health information systems and data.
On December 13, after recovering all of his data, he was able to file a complaint.
However, French judges and investigators, as well as Swiss authorities, advise victims not to pay any ransom.
As is often the case, the details of the attack remain somewhat unclear. We don’t know how thisransomware made its wayonto the school’s network. It’s a safe bet that a user unaware of the dangers of phishing was the cause of this mishap.
