The cyberattacks are becoming increasingly common these days, particularly ransomware.
Like other cyberattacks of its kind, this attack involves stealing personal data from infected computers.
This is malware hidden within a malicious email that, once opened, encrypts your data and blocks access to it. The cybercriminals demand a ransom in cryptocurrency in exchange for decrypting your data, which is how this attack gets its name.
Several major attacks have made headlines recently; let’s start with the ransomware GandCrab.
Its main feature is that it demands ransom payments in Dash, a cryptocurrency launched in 2014. Typically, most ransomware demands Bitcoin as payment.
The subject line of the message can be anything and everything, designed to maximize the number of potential clicks. It might include threats about the possession of questionable information obtained through your search engines, promises of financial gain, declarations of love, and much more… Criminals certainly don’t lack imagination.
If your computer has been infected with the GandCrab ransomware, the “Bitdefender” tool may be able to thwart the attack and help you recover your data.
Nevertheless, the developers of this ransomware are also very quick to respond, and they rapidly create new versions of their software that Bitdefender and others are unable to counter.
The odds are still slim, but it’s worth a try.
GandCrab Ransomware: The End of a Nightmare?
In fact, the creators of the GandCrab ransomware reportedly stated on a forum, “All good things must come to an end,” after announcing their “well-deserved” retirement. And so, they claim to have earned more than $150 million thanks to their software, a windfall distributed across“various sectors of the legitimate business world, both in real life and on the Internet […]”
However, Brian Krebs has continued his investigation and reveals that a growing body of evidence suggests the GandCrab team may have been hiding behind new names such as “Revil,” “Sodin,” and “Sodinokibi.” We can only hope that law enforcement will succeed in uncovering their true identities…
