Cyberattack on Sarrebourg town hall

During the night of June 5 to 6, the town of Sarrebourg (Moselle) was the victimof aransomware cyberattack. The cybercriminals encrypted their computer data.
In accordance with ANSSI recommendations, the municipality immediately filed a complaint. It also refused to pay the ransom of 7.6 bitcoins (nearly €55,000) that was demanded.

In addition, the teams in Sarrebourg managed to restore the backups: some services are once again accessible a few days after the attack. Operations will only return to normal in a few weeks.

An independent service for managing requests related to identity cards or passports has been set up. This system has not been affected.

The origin of the attack remains unknown at this time. As a precaution, Fabien Di Filippo, Representative for the 4th district of Moselle, announced that Sarrebourg City Hall employees would be trained to avoid falling victim to such attacks in the future. The municipality also warned neighboring communities after falling victim to another virus last May.

As a result, the region remains on alert for the risks associated withcyberattacks in the Grand Est region.
